We are excited to present a talk on technology in astronomy at July's Tech on Toast!
Get a free breakfast, hear some of Nottingham's brightest share their ideas and projects and socialise with the other members of the local tech community, all before you start your day.
Tech on Toast is free and there are no tickets required.
We'll be serving a range of breakfast options in a relaxed environment and all are welcome, regardless of technical background.
The Technological Revolution of Modern Astronomy
by Duncan Fyfe
Modern astronomy is the epitome of big data. The next generation of observatories will deliver orders of magnitude more data.
Twenty years ago astronomers recognised they would be unable to run these observatories, let alone conduct effective research unless they created new ways of working to go with them. This need has driven a technology revolution within Astronomy leading to new standards, tools and infrastructure geared towards research and collaborative working with vast data archives.
Duncan will give an introduction to the tech developments being driven by the needs of modern astronomy, and the changes and benefits which the new tech is itself enabling.
About Duncan
Duncan is now an independent data scientist, developer and systems integrator. Before that, for 13 years he worked as a post-doc at the University of Leicester. Here he created and operated high-volume data pipelines and science software for ESA astronomy satellite missions.
